Smitten Design Textiles

Smitten Design is Katie Smith. I adore colours and cloth and treading lightly on the earth. My inspiration comes from everything around me: from rusty buckets to worn down road markings to the everyday patterns that surround us – From the moment we’re born we’re surrounded by fabric, and so fabric holds many memories and tells us so many stories. In my art practice, I love teasing out those stories and drawing them into a future of beauty and reflection. I hope you do to, and I hope you’ll be Smitten with my hand printed, limited edition colours and cloths.

How did your business begin?

I have always wanted to have my own textile printing business in some form or another. My early obsession with textiles started young as I used to hoard fabrics from Opp shops. I also used to screen print and decorate T Shirts and 2nd hand clothes as a teenager. I love the uniqueness of hand printing and exploring its numerous possibilities. I graduated with an M.A in Textile Art from Goldsmiths University of London, in 1995, and prior to this I studied textiles at Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin. I like to keep my work simple, spontaneous, experimental, contemporary and timeless.

What gets you up in the morning?

Ha! not a great morning person, but gotta get them school lunches made. Sometimes I sneak in a morning walk in which is a great way to focus and plan the day ahead.

When you're not working you are

I’m always working! it’s a labour of love. We have a compulsory screen free day in our house on Sundays, so thats a very important bit of down time when I’m not trolling through instagram or updating my website! We live in Titirangi so often visit Te Uru gallery, go on bush walks, visit the cafes, drive to Cornwallis, or just hang at home.
